The Big C Word

Here's what I'm doing, I was diagnosed with Adeno Carcinoma in my lung in December 2008, and have been getting chemotherapy treatment for 4 years every 21 days, with a 6 month break in there somewhere.

First I was getting treatment out in Ohio, where I live.

Things weren't working out for me so during a 6 month break I called Cancer Treatment Center of America at (847) 872-4561 and asked them if I could get a second opinion.
I did, and I am still with them.
If you want to know about their treatment and their hospital, send me an email and I will tell you how privileged I am to be a patient of theirs and on a 'real' scale not just a commercial.
Ive been flying out to the Zion location every 21 days and getting chemo, then flying home.
My friends and family and several churches have been praying for a miraculous breakthrough and a supernatural turnaround.
God answers prayers.
Slowly and with endurance me and my husband have come to the place where the next and (dare I say) last treatment is 30 days of radiation.
So on February 20th I will go back to Zion, Illinois and begin the regimen.
One treatment every day for 5 weeks, in between that two Hypothermia treatments.

So there it is my cancer agenda unveiled.

So now that you know and the cats outta the bag, do you think you can help us?

Dorkery Geekery Art

Geekery Art came into art genres, for me, about 5 years ago.It's those works of 'art' that are really dorky, not sophisticated. One looks at it and thinks, why? One definition could be: a serious attempt at art that went off the deep end.

Nobody wants to decorate with geekery art, it's usually a 'gag' gift. It's really fun to look at peoples 'geekery art', and every once in a while someones 'hits it outta the ball park' with a really dumb piece that everybody wants. The 'pet rock' is an example of 'geekery art' with an equally geekery pet rock box. We can't afford to spend money on nonsense like that these days, that's for sure. Sometimes trying to make a present for someone turns geekery, but no one buys it.

It's Back...My Art is Back

For about three years I've been going through Chemotherapy and I couldn't paint. I couldn't find the patience or the motivation everything was missing. I tried looking at photos and books and nothing worked. I was beginning to think it was over, that my painting days were done. In one last ditch effort I began to paint a little craft plate and completely finished it, but it was terrible so I washed it off and plan on starting over. Just yesterday me and my husband were out in the garage playing with red one shot paint, we practiced painting lines and squiggles and all sorts of things. It was pretty fun. But to top it all off this morning my art manager sent an email and said I was a 'Featured Artist'

That's when I realized It's back, my art is back

Thank God!

Naming Paintings, Titles and Such

When you've been painting as long as I've been painting one tends to run out of names to call their paintings.

Lately I opened an Imagekind store front and I had to name all the new uploads, hum.

"Should I call them by human names" was a thought.

Rhyming always seems to be the thing I do. Naming them is a creative endeavor also, 'Red in my head' is a series of paintings with dark reds.

Giving them title always reminds me of the nail polish company OPI and all the cool names they came up with on the nail polish colors and I used to think that it would be a fun job sitting around making up names for polish.

Who knew I would be naming my very own paintings for a web site.

Pineing for the Seasons Sounds

I tell Barney my rescue dog that, 'it's just mom playin' the computer' when I play the song bird sounds on the web page, he stands at the door like he wants out to bark them away, but its a few weeks till the song birds come out. When I ask him to come pose for a picture he goes into another room. He's not handsome. When I paint birds I usually end up knowing a bit about them or doing a mini study about it's life style and so on. The Whip-poor-will is a night bird and sings a dusk, liken to an owl. An early risers bird.

The bird I really pine for as fall goes into winter months is the 'morning dove'

Just to play the sound on the computer brings hope and comfort, something like comfort food does and warm sunshine. Paintings to follow.

Christmas Trees

I just got back from Chicago and I missed the opportunity to take pictures of the beautiful Christmas trees that I could have shown you, opps! I'm sure your aware of my excuse by now.
I had other things on my mind (ie:Chemotherapy) so it stole another piece of me, not to worry I have an idea that you can help me with.

Thanksgiving Everyday

November and I am thankful everyday and there are a ton of reasons why too. Have you ever noticed as soon as we think about the things we are thankful for everything seems to work out perfectly fine? I have. I'm painting Christmas cards and I am just plain thankful to be able to do this. Here are some of the latest cards.

These are traditional Christmas designs that are from kids coloring books, when I sit down to do the next nine cards (my goal is 25) I will try to think outside the normal.

Two Months and October

It's already October and the days are flying by like jet airliners. I finally got the timing right to join the Christmas card exchange. This will be my 3rd year, last year I had to start a new exchange because it was full, the small group I had was only about 6 full or something.

At any rate, this year I will be sending 25 hand made Christmas cards. To get warmed up I did a simple Christmas tree with gifts and called it

'Christmas Morning.'

Ok well that was warm up to get the project started and now I'm looking forward to meeting 25 artists from around the world on top of getting a top notch piece of art.

The video is a practice video I made with Final Cut Pro, it depicts my paintings and my husbands song 'Kimberlee' which he gave me for Christmas a few years ago.

August already, I just found a painting muse and it will probably take me five more days to begin. Well, my new muse will be my first canvas painting since I've been taking chemotherapy. My Doctor said to keep painting. I can't think of anything I'd rather do.
Crafting and jewelry has slowed down for a slight pause while I oversee a new canning business.

It's sad to realize there are only 20-25 days left of swimming.

Summer is going away for a while and when I'm missing the days of swimming I will fall in love with color, that will tide me over to the next time I can dip my feet into the light blue water of the pool!!

What Was That Christmas in July Gemmick?

Did you hear there was a small, or large, marketing scheme that's titled 'Christmas in July' as if we need slammed with the stress of Christmas shopping. I say that every year. Then I use the sales to gather up my craft supplies because I realize I have enough time to make homemade Christmas gifts.

Didn't the summer get used up by that oil spill? We were on our way to dreamy summer days with hot summer nights and then, bang, the news of the oil spill.

That sad mess has been sucking up the headlines all summer and now summer is almost over.

Oh, how I pine for summer, and it's not even gone yet, so don't talk to me about Christmas in July"!

But, if I were celebrating Christmas in July I would be out by the pool will some really great margaritas, homemade salsa made with my own homegrown tomatoes and peppers. It may look like Christmas but it's not sweet and cinnamony or cold, although it is hot and spicy.

The lights are around the patio and not on the Christmas tree, the ornaments are the flowers and the birds!The music is low and the company is sweet, sounds like a gift to me? See why I pine for summer.

LA Vintage Findings

Hello from Deep in The Summer

Well, not really deep in the summer, but summer has been going on for a few weeks now.

The fourth of July was relaxing and entertaining all at the same time.

The arts and crafts, jewels and gems and all that creativeness are moseying along, that means moving in a leisurely, relaxed way.

I've been watching Bravos, Americas Next Top Artist and I must say, WOW. Theres alot to say about each artist and the work and sometimes the judges hit it spot on, but other times it's just a miss. It's entertainment and thank you Sarah Jessica Parker for the show!

As for creative thoughts, it appears as they have been heading toward the holidays and family gifts.

If an item is getting 'made' for etsy it's in mind mode and is as a thought, plus it better be useful!

No room for clutter of nic nacs. I've conjured up some mural dreams too!

Fathers day is coming!

Lets give Dad a piece of Heaven this year!

Are you having a different kind of fathers day this year. Low key.

Maybe father will be working, or father lives far away.

Maybe, for some reason everybody can not get together.

My father in law always keeps it low key, although this year he asked for an eagle pendant.

He collects eagles.

Even though the fathers day gathering may be 'low key', you can still send cards and gifts or have a small dinner.

How to make a eagle pendant.

Make personalized pendants for your friends and loved ones at practically no cost.

For an eagle pendant, search the internet for a 'royalty free' eagle image.
Next, printed the image at one inch scale as shown , a one inch piece of glass and a pendant bail can be gotten on artfire or at your local craft store.
Glue them all together using water proof glue such as E-6000 (also available at the craft store). E-6000 is also safe for photographs. This glue dries to the touch in about 10 minutes.

The Mid Summer Mint Pendants

The mint resin pendants, my personal originals, took a long time to come about. So far in the collection I only have 6 pendants. Each pendant is hand poured resin and hand painted. I used the E-6000 to glue the bails on. Each pendant is uniquely different. The image colors are even depicting slightly different even though the pour was done at the same time. I even came up with a couple of bracelets with this last setting in the studio (the family room).

The bracelets shown below are plain pink baby blue resin with no fancy art, the next pour I plan on adding some flowers or animals or something really colorful and cute.

Pimitive Folk Art Windows

EEEEKKKK, My son in laws(Bill) brother (Steve) tore down a house and got these windows.

Bill got a few of the windows from him to give to me and I

finally can do a little creative project to get my mind off of winter cabin fever and the woes and cares of stuff.

The concept, make stuff to get your mind off of stuff, it's the old adage 'fight fire with fire' .

So the window is a very primitive folk art piece of a airplane for the baby's bedroom, it's not the most complicated thing and it's rather whimsical with warm tones. It has hooks to hang it and should make the room pretty country boy looking.

I have two more to do, the second will be for a little girl, the third another little boy!

Since I'm getting back into the swing of things after cancer treatment I expect the next two to be a little better then the first. If you want a primitive window for your childs nursery contact me at kim@creativehandyworks.com or via this blog.

Deep in The Winter-Make Happy

What a miserable winter we are having in Ohio.

Long days with blustery cold temperatures and people get up day in and day out and trudge through it for work, school and family. Rough.

It puts a scowl on a persons face and makes our skin ruff.

Things that make happy are simple like watching 'Saturday Night Fever'. OMG,What! John Travolta 'Dirty Dancing' before dirty dancing was cool!

On the side of artistic endeavors, I'm gearing up for some cool pendants, acrylic bangles, and acrylic earrings.I've got my molds ready and plan on pouring them in the next few days. I can hardly wait to come up with some cool designs. Love Jewelry.

There are a lot of image reference on the web and these images are intended as a visual aid and do not represent my bangles, pendants and earrings. When I get them done I'll post them and list them on my etsy shop. Maybe I'll do a step process so you can make your own acrylic jewelry too!

Well I happened to be out in California in August when I found (findings) a huge box of jewels and jewelry making gems and everything of that sort from the early days (vintage). I hear alot of people saying can you believe it's 2010 some people are even saying " I didn't think we'd live this long". Isn't that weird. I'm certainly glad to be here, I have a great time writing these blog posts and sending free gifts.

Well Christmas is almost at our doorsteps, I don't think shopping was very good this year. Maybe others have had a better experience. Feel free to tell me your experices in a comment.
The economic debase has changed things a bit.

Crafters Don't Get Opressed

Hello my sweet art propaganda followers this November 19th 2009. Don't you wonder about how the world of crafts and homemade is doing? November 2 it was reported that a main portion of the homemade world Martha Stewarts conglomeration that "For the third quarter, the media and merchandising conglomerate reported a loss of $4.4 million, or 8 cents a share, for the quarter. That compares with a loss of $25.2 million, or 49 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue climbed 13% to $69.3 million." Word on the Street.
You know I don't care, and all artisans around the free world probably don't care either.
We are gonna keep on crafting in the free world. ( Thats my twist on Neil Youngs song " keep on rocking in the free world" ) Artists always suffer the same economic problems in different intervals of life.

Crafting Boxes

Ok , here is the box I'm painting. It's a basic pine box pretty light weight about 10 long x 7 tall x 6 deep.
Remember I chose some ideas from Google images but I firmly decided sunflowers were the design for me

I begin putting the sunflowers on the box.

I completely cover the box with the flowers.

It takes about 6 hours to cover the box with sunflowers and I keep working towards the finished project, shown below.

I put on fine detail and the leaves which takes another 6 hours. The colors used in acrylic paint are listed:

Bright Yellow
Holiday Green
Citrus Green
White
Paprika Red
Honey Brown
Mulberry

Ghost Hunters and Crafting Christmas

I'm sitting in my dinning room watching Ghost Hunters with Meatloaf and anticipating painting a cute little box. The kids are here because school is out due to teacher conferences and they'er getting phycd out becuase of the show. Ha, ha. TAPS I personally like that guy who sets up the equipment. Maybe I should paint Ghosts all over my box. Now the kids are fighting about whatever they can disagree on, Ghost Hunters is over and were looking at movies on demand now trying to find another scary flick.

I can't stand the idea of a knife going through a door so we will not be watching anything that has that kind of action.

I'll keep pondering what to paint. Below are some ideas I got searching on google.

After my box is done, I will post it to show it finished. I guess the kids are going to watch Adventureland. LOL! It's a pretty good day.

Crafts a Waste of Time

So, whenever I write about crafting I think it's a big fat waste of time. But what I neglect to remember is that even when times are tough a person can pump out a craft or a piece of creative something they can make from their own hands and imagination. Even if it ends up at the good will it becomes something to that person who made it, such as a self esteem boost, because before it was done you didn't know you could do anything. But, well if it turns out like crap then you just confirm that you can't do anything. Give me a break, sometimes finding a niche is half the battle, how much time does anyone spend finding things they are good at? 'American Idol' is a testimony to a whole bunch of people following the wrong path. Can you believe how many people think they can sing, only to find out by Simon , that they can't carry a tune in a bucket. People wasting time, huh!

I don't even wonder if I'm good at painting anymore, I've made a few bucks at it enough to dispel 'the curse of the wicked servant' and I have gifts and great comfort of knowing I can take a rock and get five bucks for it just for painting it. But it's not about me, crafting that is, it's about you. Did I say that you could go rock hunting and get some 50 cent craft paint and evenhandedly bring back the pet rock. Those were the days my friend. Well even the little purse up there was only 79 cents at my local craft store, I'm going to put a bracelet or a necklace in it and give it to my thirteen year old friend at Christmastime.
